WOMEN OF THE BALKANS

September 07, 2009

Balkans.com announces list of women who make a difference in the Balkans

Anne Frank

Balkans.com Business News is pleased to present a selection of women who have contributed to the region, gaining distinction through achievements that have changed the face of society, enriched a country, or become a point of inspiration.

We feature over 50 women from 12 countries, many overcoming challenges before rising to the top of formerly male strongholds.

Our selection includes corporate leaders, politicians, diplomats, royalty, academics, philanthropists, judges, prosecutors, lawyers, playwrights, musicians and athletes who have contributed through their leadership and abilities to making a difference.

We may never hear of these women's sleepless nights, sacrifices and challenges -- but we can all be inspired by their accomplishments to do more.

At the same time, women in all walks of life are tirelessly but anonymously working for improvement of the social, political, economic and cultural development of their region.

As Balkan inventor Nikola Tesla noted as early as 1926: "It is clear to any trained observer, and even to the sociologically untrained, that a new attitude toward sex discrimination has come over the world through the centuries……Through countless generations, from the very beginning, the social subservience of women resulted naturally in the partial atrophy….of mental qualities which we now know the female sex to be endowed with no less than men.”

We applaud the women of the Balkans – the ones that follow in our Top List and countless others known and unknown – for the difference they have made in southeastern Europe and beyond.
