German RWE and Serbian EPS ink partnership deal

Marko Subotic in Belgrade - 17.11.2009

Serbia's power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (www.eps.rs) and Germany's RWE have signed a partnership agreement to work on projects in the Balkan country's electricity sector, including construction of a new hydropower plant.

The agreement was signed during Serbian President Boris Tadic's recent visit to Berlin.

“The first step entails plans to build hydropower plants with a total capacity of up to 3,000 megawatts," RWE said in a statement.

"Modern hydro pumped-storage and run-of-river power plant technology will tap the extensive hydropower potential in the region and secure CO2-free energy supply to the population there.”

RWE (www.rwe.com) is looking at three potential locations for the plant: the Danube, Morava and Drina rivers.

The Drina forms the border between Serbia and Republika Srpska, the Serb entity in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
