Montenegro Minister Djurovic: ‘Legal Harmonization project’ a 1.7 million Euro finance from the EU, had come at the right moment.

Michael Roberts - 22.03.2010

A two-day seminar on language issues in the EU integration process, financed by the European Union under a twinning project “legal harmonization" ended on Thursday in Podgorica.

Mr. Florian Horner, a representative of the EU Delegation to Montenegro said that the seminar will help Montenegro to strengthen its institutional capacities for harmonization with acquis.

“Candidate countries must bring their institutions, administrative and judicial systems as well as governance in line with European standards in all acquis areas both at the national and regional level.”

“The translation of the acquis communautaire is a huge challenge for every country with the goal of joining the EU. In this context, regional cooperation is a key factor,” Mr. Horner said.

The Minister of European Integration Mrs. Gordana Djurovic said the issue of language is very important in the EU accession process and that Montenegro faces huge challenges both in translation of EU’s legislation into Montenegrin and local legislation into the English language.

“Therefore, regional cooperation in this area should be of interest for all the countries in the region, especially for Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina because of linguistic similarities but also because of similar accession dynamics,” Mrs. Djurovic said

Minister Djurovic noted that the seminar on the language issue in the EU integration process under the twinning project ‘Legal Harmonization,’ financed by 1.7 million Euro from the EU had come at the right moment.

The seminar was designed to help Montenegro develop the technical and theoretical tools needed to strengthen efficiency in the harmonization process. Participants in the seminar are public servants, experts and interpreters.
