Croatian parliament approves new economy minister

Igor Ilic - 20.11.2009

The Croatian parliament has approved Djuro Popijac as the new economy minister, whose task will be to revive the Balkan country's staggering economy ahead of European Union accession, tentatively expected in 2012.

In recent years Popijac was head of the national employers' association HUP, and a main advocate of reforms to make the economy more competitive.

The parliament also approved Finance Minister Ivan Suker and Health Minister Darko Milinovic as Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor's deputies in charge of economy and welfare policies.

Croatia's economy is set to contract by 5% to 6% this year, while the government hopes for a mild recovery of 0.5% in 2010.

Former economy minister Damir Polancec resigned last month amid public and media pressure following a series of corruption scandals related to companies in which the state has a stake.
