FACTBOX: Latest measures taken to fight H1N1 flu in the Balkans

Reuters Editorial Reference Unit - 18.11.2009

The World Health Organisation has advised governments to prepare for a long-term battle against the new H1N1 swine flu, which is a mixture of swine, bird and human viruses and has killed 7,000 people globally, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

Here are some of the latest measures taken in the Balkans:

BULGARIA

Bulgaria declared national epidemics on Nov.6. The health ministry recommended that public events be limited.

CROATIA

Vaccination started on Nov.5 and health authorities have urged all citizens to participate. The health ministry has said vaccines ordered from Swiss company Novartis are expected to arrive in early December.

CYPRUS

Immunisation of around 50% of the population will start on Nov.23, with high-risk groups taking priority. Nearly all schools in the Turkish-held areas have shut down until that date. About 5,000 doses of vaccine received from Turkey have been given to the elderly and infirm, and another 250,000 doses are available, which almost covers the entire population in the north.

GREECE

Greece started vaccinating doctors, health workers, the elderly and the sick against the swine flu on Nov.16. The Mediterranean country, which receives about 15 million tourists every year, has said it will vaccinate its entire population of 12 million against the H1N1 virus. The country has already placed orders with Novartis, Glaxo and Sanofi for 8 million vaccine doses, which will be gradually received by January.

ROMANIA

Romania has 1.3 million doses of vaccine that could be used starting at the end of November, and has decided to double the number of doses to be made at the health ministry's Cantacuzino Institute to 10 million. Cross-border transit has been intensified to identify potential cases of infection.

SERBIA

Serbia declared flu epidemics on Nov.11. The government signed a contract with Novartis to purchase a total 3 million vaccines. Novartis and its Serbian representative, Jugohemija, will deliver 500,000 doses of the vaccine by mid-December and administer them to priority groups (infants, toddlers, pregnant women, the elderly, patients with chronic diseases and health workers). The remaining doses will be delivered between January and March.

SLOVENIA

Vaccination started Nov.2. Slovenia recorded its first death from swine flu on Nov.3.

TURKEY

So far some 250,000 people have been vaccinated in a program starting with health sector workers and Muslim pilgrims travelling to Mecca. Health authorities began a program on Oct.16 to vaccinate children between the ages of six months and five years and people of all ages who have chronic illnesses.
