Greece, Cyprus, others to cut quota for Atlantic bluefin tuna in 2010

Douglas Engle - 16.11.2009

Fishing nations including Greece and Cyprus have agreed to cut by about one-third the quota for Atlantic bluefin tuna, a fish prized by sushi lovers.

The annual quota for bluefin next year will be 13,500 tonnes, down from 19,950 tonnes, said the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

The cut combined with other measures, including shortening the tuna-fishing season to one month and a recovery plan, give a 60% probability that bluefin stocks will recover in 15 years, ICCAT chairman Fabio Hazin told Reuters.

Stocks of the Atlantic bluefin tuna, which can fetch up to $100,000 for a single fish, are less than 15% of their size before large-scale commercial fishing began.

Environmentalists had called on the ICCAT, an intergovernmental body of 48 nations, to agree to a zero quota and list the fish as an endangered species. They said a quota of 8,000 tonnes was needed for a 50% chance of species revival.

Environment groups aim to have international trade of bluefin banned next year by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
