After a solid 1Q13, Serbian real GDP growth eased in 2Q13 as the household consumption and investment depression deepened. On the flip side, this allowed very modest import growth in 1H13, which, coupled with the expected FIAT export boost, prompted a quicker-than-expected recovery of the C/A.
Both this and rising FDI inflows are well timed for Serbia, given the Fed-taper-induced deteriorating outlook for portfolio flows.
Still, the fiscal sphere remains Serbia's Achilles' heel, with another budget-target slippage in the bag for 2013. FinMin Krstic's appointment in early September strengthened hopes that the Serbian authorities are committed to securing a deal with the IMF sooner rather than later. In the meantime, the NBS should continue to smoothen EURRSD upside risks.
