Slovenia's Mercator grocery group has reportedly appointed advisers to help restructure €1bn of debt, a move that is a key condition for the sale of a majority stake to Agrokor. According to media reports, the move is likely to be carried out under a new Slovenian restructuring law, rather than the UK scheme of arrangement, which requires a firm to gain approval from only 75% of its creditors.
Under the deal with Agrokor, Mercator has until December to agree a restructuring with its banks, although Reuters claimed that this can be extended to March 2014 if needed. The news agency, citing anonymous sources, added that Mercator will have to restructure its debt whether the acquisition goes ahead or not reports Kam City.
