Bulgarian honey yield for 2013 was a record for the last 10 years, chairman of the Bulgarian beekeepers Mikhail Mikhailov informed. Bulgarian bees produce between 6,000-12,000 tons of honey per year. According to Mikhailov, around three-quarters of the Bulgarian honey gets exported, Standart daily wrote.
The exact consumption within Bulgaria is unknown, because only half of the beekeepers in the country are registered, ie are included in the statistics. While retail prices have been unchanged for years and are around BGN 3.50 – 4.50 per kg, the cost of honey in smaller quantities rose to BGN 12-BGN 14.
Though he can not prove it, Mikhailov believes that there is a cartel agreement between the merchants and processors of honey in order to maintain low prices. American Chamber of Commerce, Bulgaria
