The weapons collection campaign has been launched in Brcko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Campaign is entitled “Choose Life Without Weapons”. It aims to sensitize population of Brcko District and throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina on negative aspects of illegal possession and use of weapons and to motivate individuals to surrender their illegal weapons.
“With this Campaign we will allow citizens to surrender their weapons and explosive devices with no sanctions. It is enough that they call the free phone number 122 and the Police will come to collect weapons. Use this chance!” said Goran Lujic, Chief of Police of Brcko Distict of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Campaign is being supported not only by the Police of Brcko District but also by the Brcko District Government. Mr. Esad Kadric, Deputy Mayer of Brcko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina stated that he is happy and satisfied that the Government of Brcko District is part of this Campaign. “The Police have the full support of the Government in implementation of this Campaign” Mr. Kadric said.
Whilst UNDP is the lead agency in implementation of this weapons collection campaign, the Campaign is a true joint partnership of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Government of the United Kingdom, EUFOR and the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mr. Goran Vukmir, UNDP’s Head of Regional Office recognizes the role of these international organizations and praises the Brcko District Police as a credible police agency. “This is a chance to call people of Brcko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina to protect they families and children and to surrender illegal weapons. This is an opportunity to raise awareness of population and to surrender their weapons and explosive devices.” said Mr. Vukmir in his speech to media.
With this event, the Campaign at this stage covers Brcko District of BiH and Republika Srpska while it is anticipated to expand the Campaign to additional five cantons in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina the next week and later in the process the additional five cantons. UNDP
