The construction of Serbia's Belgrade bridge over the Danube will be completed by 2014

Balkans.com Business News Correspondent - 21.08.2013

The construction of Serbia's Belgrade bridge over the Danube, connecting the remote municipalities of Zemun and Borca, is to be completed by the end of 2014, as specified in the contract with the Chinese company, and no delays are acceptable, stated Belgrade mayor Dragan Djilas. During the visit to the construction site at approaching traffic connections, Djilas stressed that the City of Belgrade and the Serbian Government have fulfilled all their obligations to the Chinese partner. The report of Ranka Pavlovic.

We have received unofficial announcements from the Chinese company that they would like to extend the deadline for the completion of the bridge to May 2015. For us, that is absolutely unacceptable, Djilas emphasized. “This project is worth 260 million dollars, and I expect those who have been entrusted with the works through the direct agreement of the two countries to show a high level of responsibility and finish the works in due course. Technical capacities are available and delays are impossible,” stated the Belgrade mayor. He added that in the past five years none of the construction projects in the capital have been late.

The works on the bridge between Zemun and Borca are part of a traffic ring road around Belgrade, which may enable the relocation of the cargo traffic from the urban core of the city. The construction of the bridge is progressing in all sections. Of the 166 reinforced concrete segments that are being planned, a bit more than one third have been built in the main arch. It should be 362 meters wide, and so far 120 meters have been done. Currently, the works have also encompassed 10km of approaching roads, built by Serbian companies.

The “Chinese bridge”, also called “Bridge of friendship”, over the Danube river is in most part financed from a loan of the Chinese Exim Bank. The works are conducted by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, with a condition of 45% of construction materials coming from the Serbian production. The bridge will be 1,482 meters long, 29m wide and 22.8m high, with the total of six motor traffic lanes, as well as bicycle and pedestrian lanes on both sides. It will also have one big arch for the passing of vessels, while the total length of all approaching roads will be 21.6km. Radio Srbija
