Balkans.com Business News Correspondent - 05.04.2013

The blast furnace in the Smederevo Ironworks plant will be ignited on April 15, and the planned production by the end of the year is around 700 thousand tons of steel. The first delivery of coke is already in the town port, and the ore will arrive from Ukraine next week. Jelena Milenkovic has more on the subject reports Radio Srbija. The Serbian government had made the decision to preserve the Serbian steel mill and provided the assets for the acquisition of raw materials. After almost nine months of the so-called “silent operation”, the process of cold and hot iron rolling will commence, making the product for the market. It will mean the work for 5,300 employees, but also serve as the generator of the development in the metallurgy. The state has also provided guarantees via the Fund for Development, so that the banks could give credits for the acquisition of materials. The Smederevo Ironworks ordered the materials for the production of 117 thousand tons of steel cables, and the first shipments have already arrived. The materials will be obtained successively, for 45 days of work. Also planned are the new investments in the setting of new lines, to be making the galvanized and zinc coated sheet metal for the needs of the Fiat Automobiles Serbia factory in Kragujevac.
