Turkey's proportion of population 65 years and over in the total population was 7,5% in 2012. According to the population projections, it is expected that this proportion increased to 10,2% in 2023, 20,8% in 2050 and 27,7% in 2075.
Aegean Region has the highest proportion of population 65 years and over in 2012 (16,5%). Other regions that elderly population lives in intensely are İstanbul (14%), Mediterranean (11,7%) and East Marmara (9,9%) respectively. Northeast Anatolia Region has the lowest proportion of elderly persons (2,6%).
In 2023, it is expected that Turkey will take place among the countries with rising elderly population by increasing the proportion of 10,2%
Passing the proportion of 10% of Turkey's elderly population in the total population is an indicator of the aging population. In the country, the elderly population is increasing with a speed higher than that of other age groups. Turkey in the process of "demographic transition" which is called the global aging process seems to have a young population structure among the countries with the highest elderly population, but the absolute number of elderly is quite high. In the demographic transition process, structure of age groups changes, expected life at birth increases by decreasing mortality and fertility rates, and proportion of children and young population in the total population decreases.  Source; Statitistical Office
