Turkey's landline operator is planning to auction off its copper landlines in favor of fiber optic cable, the Sabah daily reported on Tuesday writes Today's Zaman. The move will see the money going to the Treasury as the country's phone network is public property.  Türk Telekom, 55 percent of which was sold in 2005 to the Dubai-based Oger Telecom, announced on its website this week that it will begin auctioning off its copper lines in April, which Sabah estimated would fetch over $10 billion in scrap. Türk Telekom's website announced on Monday that the auction-ready wire cables it had in storage throughout 81 provinces included 160 grades of conductive wire and was just a small fraction of the estimated 35 million kilometers of copper wire in Turkey's phone system.
