Serbia and Laos sign memorandum of understanding

Balkans.com Business News Correspondent - 25.02.2013

Serbia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Mrkic said in Vientiane Laos today that friendly relations between Serbia and Laos should be strengthened through economic cooperation.
During the visit, Minister Mrkic met with Prime Minister Thongsing Tamavong and Speaker of the National Assembly Pany Yathotu, and on that occasion it was agreed to send two delegations from Serbia to Laos that will investigate opportunities for the participation of Serbian companies in large projects in Laos.
On Saturday, 23 February, Minister Mrkic signed with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith a Memorandum of understanding and consultation between the foreign ministries of Serbia and Laos.
Mrkic said that the signing of this document opened space for further cooperation between the two countries, especially in the construction industry.
He pointed out that Laos is one of the fastest growing countries in Southeast Asia, and has one of the highest growth rates in Asia.
The Minister said that this country is called “battery of the region”, because hydroelectric power plants are being built at accelerated pace, and added that 15 new hydroelectric power plants will have been built by 2020 through which Laos will supply the entire region with electricity.
Mrkic said that he discussed with officials of Laos the participation of Serbian construction workers in the construction of power plants, and noted that there will probably be room for Serbia, which is known for its excellent engineers and good construction operations. Source; Serbian Government
