Serbia needs the emperor or the king, or some form of parliamentary monarchy in which the king would be the unifier of people, Patriarch Irenaeus said to the press, after the liturgy in Church of St. Andrew the First-Called at the Royal Complex in Dedinje, served on the occasion of transfer of the remains of King Peter II to Serbia from the USA.
The patriarch stressed that Serbia had achieved everything with the king and that the parliamentary monarchy would be beneficial for Serbia. The Patriarch said that the transfer of the remains of King Peter II is the major event in which no one believed 10 years ago.
"10 years ago, no one believed that King Peter, who was deprived of all the rights, would officially return to his country. This is the result of the corrected situation and stance because the state welcomes the king officially", said Irenaeus.
Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said that the event contributes to the establishment of national unity. Dacic said that Karadjordjevic family deserve to be highly respected and thus "things from history are to be corrected".
"I am satisfied that this happened while I was the Prime Minister and the leader of the party, who is heir to the party with whom the Royal family had problems during the Second World War and after," Dacic said.
The welcoming of the remains that were transferred to Belgrade from the United States was attended by Karadjordjevic family members, member of the Committee for transfer of mortal remains of the Royal family and advisor to the Serbian President Oliver Antic, and representatives of the Serbian Army.
The coffin with the remains of King Peter II will be temporarily stored in the Chapel of Saint Andrew the First-Called at the Royal Complex at Dedinje, where Serbian Patriarch Irenaeus served the liturgy today.
The date of the burial in the Royal Mausoleum in the family crypt in Oplenac will be determined in consultation with the Serbian Orthodox Church, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, the Serbian government and other royal houses.
