Renewable energy in the center of Montenegro's energy sector reform

Balkans.com Business News Correspondent - 15.01.2013

Montenegro pays special attention to the energy sector reform, as one of its greatest development potentials, in which renewable resources, primarily hydro and solar energy, take central stage, Prime Minister Milo Đukanović underlined Sunday in his speech at the opening of the 3th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), that takes place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from 13-14 January.

Responsible energy policy implies the compatibility between adequate economic valorisation of resources and environmental protection. Therefore, this process of crucial economic, ecological and social significance requires joint efforts of the government, businesses and civil society towards achieving the broadest possible consensus. The construction of the submarine cable between Montenegro and Italy has been underway, which will help Montenegro become a regional energy market. A number of projects for the construction of small hydro and wind power plants, the advancement of domestic expert skills and the organisation of regional conferences on political, economic and financial aspects of renewable energy use are the basic prerequisites for the better cooperation between Montenegro and the IRENA, PM Đukanović noted.
