Gold extended overnight gains to reach a three-week high in Asian trading Friday and appeared headed for its first weekly gain since early October.
At 0432 GMT, spot gold was at $1,734.10 a troy ounce, up $2.70 from its previous close.
In Asia, "some" speculative buying is underpinning prices, which are likely to tick higher to around $1,750/oz in the near term, said Ronald Leung, a director at Lee Cheong Gold Dealers Ltd. in Hong Kong.
The market remains focused on the U.S. "fiscal cliff"--a mix of tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect in January if Republicans and Democrats don't reach an agreement on taxes and spending, he said. Failure to reach a deal could send the U.S. back into recession, economists say.
Physical buying is also supporting prices. Gold demand in India has picked up and is expected to continue rising during the ongoing festive season, ANZ analysts said in a report.
