Serbia's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Goran Knezevic reiterated in Subotica that the government is committed to improving the situation in the economy, most notably in the agrarian sector.
Opening the Second Agriculture Forum “Food for Europe”, Knezevic explained that a special place in these efforts belongs to the fight against corruption which is causing great harm to the economy, noting that fiscal consolidation is important as a way of helping the economy to operate more easily. He observed that the government’s goal is to increase the agrarian budget, which will be reflected in the 2013 budget, announcing that next week the government will adopt a Bill on incentives to the economy. The Minister recalled that the government has helped the agrarian sector with over €150 million this year on the back of the severe droughts, noting that this is the largest assistance to agriculture in 20 years. Serbia’s agricultural potential is immense, Knezevic noted, but added that it is insufficiently used, mostly because of systemic problems, outdated technology and equipment and insufficient implementation of agri-technical measures.
